Tetanus is a neurologic disorder causing muscle spasms after exposure to the toxin spores of bacteria Clostridium tetani, which is found in the soil. The vaccine prevents this infection however, boosters are required usually every 10 years or 5 years if someone suffers a wound. Typically a penetrating injury and exposed tissue will predispose infection. Otherwise the risk is low in other settings
