During a laparoscopy, a long, thin viewing instrument, called a laparoscope, is inserted into the abdomen through a small, surgical incision. This allows your doctor to view tissue or take a tissue sample, called a biopsy. They may also remove cysts, implants, and scar tissue caused by endometriosis.

Endometriosis may be diagnosed more accurately via a laparoscopy done at the time of menstruation, as the implants seen can be biopsied for confirmation. A laparoscopy done when not menstruating may not confirm endometriosis. Ask your GYN physician about low dose oral BCP's, which can reduce symptoms of endometriosis considerably.
