A member asked:

What is the prognosis for covid in a 3 month old baby? for instance, if mom tested positive? how severe is it typically? are there any stats on this? should mom continue breastfeeding if she has it or try to isolate away from baby?

At this age, the immune system is still developing and there is no currently available COVID 19 vaccination. Was the mom vaccinated against COVID 19 during the pregnancy or did the mom have COVID 19 while pregnant? If so, natural antibody transfer to the baby may be protective. Continue to nurse or pump/store milk/Dad can feed. Watch for cough, fever, rapid breathing. PCP follow up rec.

Most 3 month old healthy babies who contract Covid (most recent omicron version) experience fever, nasal congestion, cough, decreased eating, increased sleeping or fussiness, and occasionally rashes. The illness typically resolves in 7-10 days. Only a tiny fraction 0.5% require hospitalization or more intensive intervention (and those babies typically have other medical issues)
