What is it called when you have a fast sucking in of breathing once in a while? kind of like when a child cries for a long time and gets a quick sucking in of air. i have broken ribs and this is happening every once in a while?

An occasional deep breath is a normal part of the bodies effort to regulate your acid base balance. Under-ventilating over time triggers a natural response to make the slight correction. Some do it more than others. If it bothers you discuss it with your doc to see if it is within the normal range or not.
