Typically, if the medicine is taken as prescribed, it would not induce seizures in someone who is not prone to seizures. But, if you take the gabapentin for years and wish to stop taking it, the medication should be weaned off under a doctor’s care, not stopped abruptly. Stopping the med abruptly can induce seizures in some patients, usually those who are seizure-prone but better to be safe!

Gabapentin has be used for years as an anti-epileptic drug and has never caused seizures or epilepsy. Use off label for RLS and other conditions is quite common. Stopping drug abruptly could eventuate in withdrawal seizures, and this risk is a potential even if no prior events. If you wish to stop, taper slowly under supervision of your doctor.
