A member asked:

Ever since starting a full face mask for cpap i've had a numb chin. it's like when your dental anesthesia wares off because it presses on your chin. i switched to a nasal mask and hoping for relief. could this be anything else? no stroke, i can smile?

If the numbness is on both sides of the chin, I suspect damage or injury to superficial nerve endings from pressure by the mask. If so, it should heal in time and numbness or tingling will resolve. A stroke would only involve one side of the chin. A neurologist can confirm this.

Most likely pressure induced temporary paresthesia but the neurologist will do a baseline exam. It’s possible that the mask caused some backward pressure of your lower jaw with compression of the nerves which is rarely permanent. If not tolerant with nasal mask ask if Oral Appliance Therapy is an option made by a dentist. Take care!
