That area is either muscle (superficial) or left kidney (deep). If the pain exacerbates with body motion, strain or coughing, you have a muscle strain and spasm. This pain is relieved with massage, cold or heat. If the pain does not change with the above and pain radiates to the groin with change in urine color, pain due to kidney stone (renal colic) is a possibility. GERD is less likely, I agree.
