Ive read that the herpes virus does not live long outside the body. if the virus sheds off onto someones hand (through handjob), how long will the virus survive on it?

Herpes is rarely if ever transmitted by hand-genital contact. Since it never happens, the biological reasons (e.g., virus survival) really don't matter. It would be wise to push your luck: if a partner has known genital herpes, it would be wise to not use genital fluids for lubrication. If no known herpes or symptoms of an outbreak, I wouldn't even worry about that.
