Is it common practice for specialists, such as urologists, to have new patients seen only by a nurse practitioner and not see the patient themselves?

Depends on how busy the urologist is. Need to sort out what is most likely going on and this can be done by a good history and general exam while they are in operating room.

Each practice has its own rules. Generally an acute or complex case is seen by the Urologist
