Am sorry to hear of your son's terrible experience. Unfortunately, it may take months for maximal healing, and likely that exertion activities will be extremely difficult at this point. There will be healing but not feasible to predict extent based upon your post. Recommend a visit to a respiratory specialist.

The course may be prolonged, and follow up care includes avoiding smoke, allergens,fungus and mold exposure. If he has bronchospasm, a treatment plan with inhaled steroids is recommended, after discussing with your physician. Keep all vaccinations current.
