Left untreated a urinary tract infection can be life threatening becuase iof the potential for kidney failure. Make sure your Mom is in good medial care so that this can be overcome quickly. Blood in the urine is a serious sympton of tissue damage.

Hematuria may be present in cystitis (bladder infection). Cystitis is not a life threatening condition if properly taken care. If urinalysis becomes normal after treatment except a slightly high urine residual she needs to do pelvic muscle exercise for improving the bladder contraction. If she has chronic diabetes mellitus, high residual is more problematic and it can be a risk factor for UTI.
