X-rays are rarely helpful unless the symptoms suggest a problem requiring more specific treatment. A good exam and review of history/physical findings by trained providers is the best form of care. I don't 2nd guess someone who has the benefit of those findings.

Most likely, if the cough is improved, your back pain is related to musculoskeletal strain and inflammation due to coughing. Apply a heating pad, monitor temperature and breathing. Watch for signs of infection and shortness of breath.
