Neither of these tests for variants. Sequencing of the viral RNA is needed for identification of variants. With increasing knowledge, nucleic acid probes can be developed to address variants.

In a very recent report (released today or yesterday), it turns out that the standard PCR tests CAN almost automatically tell whether infection is due to the Delta variant (by far the most common in the US at present) and Omicron. As I understand it, most PCRs detect 3 genetic epitopes for Delta, but only 2 of them for Omicron. It's a simple step for the lab to know... [continued in comment]
