Weight lifting can exacerbate the hernia so you should switch to hand weights only. If you still want to lift weights, you can do it with light weights which do not cause too much pressure increase in the abdominal cavity. I prefer you discuss the issue with your doctor or with an experienced trainer.

Lifting weights & any heavy objects can definitely worsen a sliding hiatal henia. The amount of safe weight to lift is highly variable. If you're serious about doing weight lifting , i recommend consulting a thoracic surgeon to evaluate your hernia status and then advise you. There are other exercises like situps that harm you also. Don't strain your abdomen unnecessarily.
