Probably: Weight loss will reduce intra-abdominal pressure, which could lessen the chance of developing a hiatal hernia. Having said that, there are many who develop a hiatal hernia that are not overweight. The cause is multifactorial, and we do not fully understand why some get it and others don't. There is probably a genetic component as well. Losing weight however is good for general health anyway.
