HIV is a weak virus that survives only briefly in the air. It is passed blood to blood in wounds that are part of the mechanical action of sex, or from HIV blood exposed to open wounds. Exposure of intact skin to blood from a HIV patient would not transfer the germ and cause infection. A needle stick to a normal person after that needle was used by an HIV person can pass the germ.
