Dry eyes can result from decreased (or poor quality) tear production. One of the causes of this can be an autoimmune reaction. Sjogren's syndrome can be one (but not the only) cause. Artificial tears are the mainstay of dry eye syndrome but immune modulators such as cyclosporin A are also used.
