A member asked:

I smoked heavily (either hookah, cigar, vape, cigarettes) 1-3 days a week for one year. it has been 2 years since i have completely quit. i am wondering if 2 years is enough to consider my related health risks lowered and equivalent to a non smoker?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not quite. It usually takes 10 years for the risk to return to near baseline risk. It is good that you quit tobacco. You can reduce your risk of cancer by adopting healthy habits: Eat a mostly vegetarian diet, avoid alcohol, tobacco and street drugs, avoid excessive exposure to sun, get HPV vaccine, exercise 30 minutes each day, drink enough water so your urine is mostly colorless.
