By far the commonest type of sustained hypertension is essential hypertension which tends to run in families. Start with lifestyle changes such as achieving ideal weight, curtailing salt, alcohol & caffeine intake. Get good sleep & regular exercise as well as reducing stress. Your BP goal is 130/80 or lower after a few weeks. Medication may be needed if you can't reach your goal of 130/80.
