Every time i try to go to sleep early i wake up 3 - 4 hours later completely unable to fall back asleep. even when i'm so exhausted that i can't stay up any longer this happens. are there any ways to avoid this?

Get tested for obstructive sleep apnea with a sleep study which can diagnosis other issues as well. Take the Epsworth sleep questionnaire online and discuss with your Dr. Spend $20 and read about sleep issues in uptodate.com and follow their recommendations to improve sleep. Zzzzz.

Please see your doc to make sure all is well medically. Psychologically, the pattern you mention can be associated w/depression, sometimes anxiety. A clinical psychologist can be helpful. Peace and good health.
