Cough is a protective reflex that helps move moist secretions and debris from deep in the lung to the outlet. Most who have a chronic cough have lung irritation that triggers it. They may or may not have a specific impaired immune response. Immune response does become sluggish with old age, which is why booster vaccines are often given to this age group.
