Blastocystis hominis 3 yrs ago. symptoms fit mayo clinic description. gastro wants to repeat test & treat me with flagyl. success rate in med. lit. is dismal. any other treatment options i could ask for? could blasto cause b12 deficiency over time?

Many drugs have been used to treat blastocystic hominis, the only question is whether your sx are due to this protozoan or it is just an innocent bystander. The preferred tx agents are Flagyl (metronidazole), Tinidazole and Paromomycin. Alternative treatment agents are TMP-SMX (sulfa drug) and Nitazoxanide. No relationship btwn Blastocystic and B12 def but other bowel diseases may cause B-12 def.
