Many conditions may manifest with low blood cells (white cell, red cell and/or platelets). If white blood cell count is low, the absolute numbers of neutrophil, lymphocyte or monocyte will be low if the differential is normal. If you have an underlying anemia, viral infection is a common cause of low white cell count. If both low WBC and RBC are new, bone marrow disease is strongly suspected.

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that,it would have helped had you provided the actual results. How low is low? Wish you good health!

Cytopenias, or low cell counts are seen in a variety of conditions, some acute, some chronic. From infections to blood disorders, including malignancies, a variety of conditions may contribute to cytopenia. Serial counts are typically done in order to better understand dynamics and diagnose properly.
