During illness, vocal cords can swell and become covered with mucus. Drink lots of warm water with lemon, avoid clearing your throat, and take medications to minimize coughing which can further damage your vocal cords. let the vocal cords rest, but make sure to be doing deep breathing exercises to maintain you normal lung capacity.
