Lung damage from smoke inhalation causes an immune response that slowly over time removes particulates from the lungs and damaged cells. If the damage is extensive (people admitted to the hospital and sometimes needing a ventilator after smoke inhalation) the damage may become permanent scarring in the lungs. Talk to your Dr about your specific case and get examined.

The lining of the airways may become more reactive and inflamed. A pulmonary function test is recommended. Discuss the duration of the exposure with your physician. Watch for signs of infection, cough and wheezing.
