A member asked:

I had a gasoline can inside my car today that leaked. the fumes were very strong and i quickly rolled down my windows. will this brief but powerfully strong smelling exposure cause permanent lung, heart or other damage to my health? why or why not?

No permanent damage: It is very unlikely that a brief exposure to gasoline, even if strong-smelling, will cause permanent damage to your lungs. Our bodies have a remarkable ability to detoxify and heal ourselves when given time to do so. If you develop any breathing difficulties, obviously, see your doctor. Or you could call a free national poison control centre for specific advice on gasoline fumes. Don't worry.

That: brief exposure is likely insufficient to cause any damage.
