I hurt my hand and cannot get it looked at until tomorrow. swollen, bruise on palm. no pain stationary, pain when in use, can make fist with pain, can touch thumb to fingers with pain, can't lift things without pain. what can i do in meantime?

In the meantime, prior to seeing physician and perhaps getting X-ray: elevation, intermittent ice (ice pack or styrofoam ice cup) perhaps 6-8 minutes every hour, plus OTC pain relievers if no medical contraindication. Disclaimer: I am a psychiatrist; the filter that's supposed to limit questions to my specialty obviously isn't working.
