A member asked:

I am a 63 year old female and just found out my blood type is ab+ and was told my rbc antibody is positive my value anti-jka which i was told was serious if i ever need a blood transfusion. can you explain what this means and is it hereditary?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Either through prior blood transfusion or pregnancy, you got exposed to JKA antigen and made antibodies to it, as is normal. It is not dangerous. Should you need a blood transfusion, the blood bank will exclude blood from donors who carry this antigen. Wish you good health!
