One cannot make the diagnosis of prostatitis just by the consistency of the prostate with a rectal exam. Do you have any other symptoms of acute prostatitis and what is the reason for the rectal exam? Prostate is quite tender with rectal exam when it's inflammed, did you feel that when she palpate your prostate? Were urinalysis and urine culture done post exam if the pre-exam tests were negative?

If you were experiencing symptoms of urinary difficulties, groin, rectal or lower abdominal, low back discomfort and your prostate was tender and the examiner considered it mushy, prostatitis seems likely. Did you have a urine culture? Treatment with appropriate antibiotics for 3-4 weeks is pretty standard. If you don't improve, consult a urologist as you may have nonbacterial prostatitis.

several red flags. Why a prostate check at age26yrs? 'soft' is a very subjective observation specially by someone who is not a Urologist. In my opinion if you have no symptoms do not take the antibiotics. Next rectal should be for a reason not a prostate check
