See answer: In a young adult male, the most common type of prostatitis is non-bacterial and associated with negative cultures. That said, a small percent of pts do respond to a 2-3 week course of antibiotics so not unreasonable, but repeated courses of antibiotics generally neither indicated or of value. Various measures other than antibiotics are generally used to treat this more common non-infectious type.
