A member asked:

I had a scaphoid fracture 12 years ago, which got fixed with a screw and vascularized graft. i refractured the bone this week. how might the graft and the screw (it's still in there) affect the recovery? will it help or hinder proper healing?

The presence of a screw and graft will definitely complicate the picture depending on the degree of involvement in the fracture. Your best resource will be the hand surgeon who reconstructed it first if still in practice and available.

Scaphoid fractures can be challenging to heal, thus why you had the prior surgery. If it fractured again, the screw is unlikely to help the fracture to heal, and hopefully it doesn't hinder it. The screw is taking up some space of the bone, lessening the healing potential areas. Followup with a hand specialist is important.
