A member asked:

If a person fell asleep due to a depressant drug, would it be likely for them to stay asleep even if their surroundings started filling with co2 and they were running out of air? might they fail to wake up and lose consciousness in their sleep?

If Carbon dioxide (CO2) narcosis is a condition that develops when excessive CO2 is present in the bloodstream, leading to a depressed level of consciousness. This condition largely results from lung disease, hypoventilation, or environmental exposure or a person fell asleep due to depressant drug, the chances are high the person will stop breathing and cause death.

Agree with Dr. Assif: A person under the influence of a CNS depressant will be unable to respond to rising CO2 and would die of asphyxia.
