A 33-year-old female asked:

Is it normal for progesterone levels to go up and down even during pregnancy? should the levels only be going up? is there a concern if values drop in early pregnancy, but hcg is on track?

Progesterone level is gradually going up through out the pregnancy. In early pregnancy (first trimester) when placenta has not fully developed, HCG level is probably as important as progesterone level. However, if progesterone level drops persistently, especially in the first semester, it is an alarm.
