The answer to this question depends on how painful the cramps are. If the cramps are mild to moderately severe, often they can be controlled with a hot water bottle and Midol or Ibuprofen. If severe or accompanied by heavy or prolonged bleeding, she should see a doctor.

I agree with prior answers that intensity is a necessary factor in treatment choices. Discomfort that keeps the kid from attending school or work is worrisome. NSAIDS (Ibuprophen) started the day before expected menses' or at the first cramp help some individuals. In others, a low dose birth control pill can help. Discuss this with her doc.
