Giardia is a water-borne organism that is transmitted by ingestion of water contaminated with fecal bacteria from other people or animals. A person who swallows the contaminated water will experience infection of their intestines causing watery diarrhea, nausea and bloating/gas. The organism will not cause infection of the skin, blood or other body fluids. It must be ingested.
