A member asked:

Are esomeprazole capsules safe for the liver..when liver function tests show elevated direct bilirubin(0.6)and delta bilirubin(0.6)..?because many medicines metabolize in the liver?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Despite its wide usage, esomeprazole has not been felt to be toxic to the liver and has been used in patients with chronic liver disease such as for the eradication of h pylori. It may be metabolized slower in the presence of liver disease so I wouldn't recommend using the stronger dose. Your pharmacist and/or a gastroenterologist can advise you further.
