They do serial ultrasounds when the nodule is this small to see if it begins growing. If it begins growing, they can then biopsy it. But, if it never grows, after 2 years, by definition, it would be benign (malignant tumors begin growing in that time). Typically, they do the ultrasounds fairly frequently and then begin spacing them out a bit if there is no growth. Hopefully, it will prove benign!
