Without knowing exactly how low your levels are (just a little below normal or way below normal) it's difficult to say exactly how much over a one month period of time you should take. In general I suggest 5000 IU daily as a safe dose that will raise your Vitamin D level.

Experts on Vitamin D suggest between 50 and 80 as a reference range on lab testing. Please stick w/your doctor for guidance. Many people w/low D find 5K IUs daily raises their level but your doc will advice you.

Low levels of Vitamin D have been associated with sun blockers, and supplementing orally should stabilize levels. Since you do not indicate your current levels, it is hard to advise a specific dosing plan. Generically, taking 800 i.u.-2,000 i.u. once daily should elevate levels and since it is fat soluble, best to check outcome in 3-4 months. Ideally, aim for 50-70 ng/ml.

This depends on why one has the low vitamin D. If a simple one a day supplement normalizes the vitamin D, then it is the most common cause---low dietary and no sunlight.600 IU for people ages 1 to 70 years, and 800 IU for people over 70 BUT the active form of vitamin D has to be activated in turn by the Liver and Kidney. A lot of disease of either and you dont' make the active form and need that.
