Had a blood test taken that said i have an abnormal red blood cell count of 5.49. i live in a high altitude area and dont drink much water.is this count a problem and if so what thing can one do to lower rbc? is this sign of concern?

Yes, dehydration and living at high altitude can both contribute to an elevated red blood cell count or polycythemia.Trying to hydrate better is what you can try for now as serial counts will be needed in order to identify a pattern and in case further workup is needed. Your doc remains your best reference and can coordinate going forward.

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, A normal RBC count in men would be: – 4.7 to 6.1 million cells per microlitre (cells/mcL) Wish you good health!
