A member asked:

My 29 year old daughter has just been scheduled for an ultrasound by her obgyn because of a painless lump found in her breast. she is very well endowed and 1 day away from her period. is there anything i can tell her to reassure her?

Ultrasound is a non-invasive way to see if the lump is something worrisome or not. Many such lumps are just fibrocystic disease and require no special treatment. If the ultrasound does not clarify the issue there are other studies they will consider. It sound like her doc is properly cautious.

You can tell your daughter that breast cancer is not likely, that more than likely this is a breast cyst which can be alleviated by simple aspiration, that aspiration should be preceded by ultrasound examination.
