A member asked:

What are the odds of getting hsv-2 from handjob? i got one this month, not sure if this person had sores on hand (whitlow). i assumed not as they disinfected before & after, & assumed it would be an uncomfortable activity with sores present. worried?

Herpes is not transmitted by hand-genital contact, or so rarely you can ignore the possibility, especially if you're having no symptoms that suggest genital herpes.

HSV-2 is HERPES SIMPLEX virus of the genital area caused by skin to skin contact of open wound. A WHITLOW lesion on hand can cause a HSV-2 VIRUS with skin contact. No lesion on hand will not cause an HSV-2 VIRUS but a anal ,oral or vaginal contact will and can cause an infection. Always practice safe sex and know your partner.
