A member asked:

My brother, 53, had one episode of acute cholangitis (fever, rigor and right upper abdominal pain as symptoms). he was given antibiotics & 2 weeks later ercp was done. stone is removed. will the episode of cholangitis cause cirrhosis in the future?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

If he does not have persistent obstruction to the flow of bile, he is not at risk of cirrhosis from this episode. He should abstain from alcohol, maintain healthy weight and get Hep B vaccination.
