Acute cholangitis is usually the result of an infection of bile within the bile ducts often due to blockage of the bile flow by a stone, or other cause such as cancer. The infection itself is an emergency usually requiring drainage and antibiotics. Since the biliary tree is within the liver, hepatitis can result as well. Acute vs chronic hepatitis has to do mainly with length of time and cause.
