A member asked:

What can one do for a hyperactive vagus nerve in the throat and mouth that causes a tickle and cough whenever the tickle occurs?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Tickle that provokes cough is due to irritation/inflammation of the back of the throat. Common causes are allergies, colds, sinusitis (postnasal drip), acid reflux and also inhaled irritants (smoke, pollution, vapors), cold air. Avoiding the irritant and treatment of postnasal drip are first steps in managing the problem.
