A member asked:

Why does partial rectal prolapse tend to resolve on its own in children, but for adults, surgery is usually needed? is this true for all ages of adults

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rectal prolapse: Rectal prolapse in an adult often requires surgery because it is actually caused by broken connective tissue or stretched tissue. This is not the case in children . If the rectum actually everts out of the anus in an adult the colorectal surgeon can remove and repair the defect and often preserve normal sphincter function. If you have rectal prolapse you should see a colorectal surgeon nearby.
