Infection,Recurrence: There are many different types of operations to treat rectal prolapse, most of which involve removing the redundant segment of intestine; there is a risk of infection associated with any bowel resection. These operations have varying rates of prolapse recurrence, depending on the technique.

Pain, recurrence: Rectal prolaapse is where the rectum falls through the anus. Most repairs are rectal (high recurrence) or abdominal (pain, long recovery). There is a new vaginal repair that is less invasive but durable.
