Sleep associations : Become habits by 6 mos. Old. If the you establish a consistent bedtime & routine: brush her teeth after she eats or drinks from a cup, read, sing, then put her in her own bed in her own room, drowsy, but awake, she'll learn to self-calm to fall asleep. She'll protest at first. If you go in, make eye contact or pick her up, it'll reinforce the crying. See the aap's healthy child app for tips.

No harm done: No harm is being done with this type of preliminary activity before sleep. It is not unreasonable to keep this up with a toddler.
