A medial patellofemoral ligament tear can be initially treated conservatively without surgery. The knee may have to be immobilized in a splint for a number of weeks to allow for healing. Physical therapy, taping, and a home program of exercises prescribed by the therapist begin after the period of immobilization. If healing is not complete and the kneecap becomes dislocated again, surgery is done.
