A member asked:

I'm losing 1-2 lbs. per day because i've restricted myself to a 500-calorie/day diet. is it okay to lose up to 2 lbs per day as long as my diet is healthy and i'm doing cardio? i was told 1 lb. per week is safer. why wouldn't 1-2 lbs. a day be good?

The problem with a Yo-Yo diet. Understand that dieting is something that can help you loose fat, but depending on how "healthy" yours is you may be loosing muscle mass as well, since using muscle breakdown may be an easier path to needed energy than fat. Long term studies also show starvation type rapid loss often eventually leads to a rebound return to baseline or ever more weight.

Agree with Dr. Ferguson. You need to have sustainable life plan. Rather than a starvation diet, aim to lose one pound per week through diet and exercise. Once you reach your desired weight you will still need to practice caloric restriction to avoid gaining it all or even more back. It may help to join a support group like weight watchers. Wish you good health!
