A mucus plug is a way the body protects fetus/mom from vaginal germs. Group b strep is a common transient germ in found in ~1/3 of women at some normal times or in pregnancy. There are others. If the plug is lost, the intact fetal membranes will still be a barrier, but if the water breaks, vaginal germs can move up & infect baby/mother. After 18 hrs risk of a fatal infection increases every hour.
